Latinos are not the only group of Americans who utilize the “some other race” category on the census form—but they are the most likely to do so. In 2010, 6.2% of Americans selected “some other race,” up from 5.5% in 2000. Among all those who answered the race question this way in 2010, 96.8% were Hispanic.

Book Review: Land of the Cosmic Race: Race Mixture, Racism and Blackness in Mexico

Land of the Cosmic Race is a richly-detailed ethnographic account of the powerful role that race and colour play in organizing the lives and thoughts of ordinary Mexicans. It presents a previously untold story of how individuals in contemporary urban Mexico construct their identities, attitudes, and practices in the context of a dominant national belief system. Carefully presented and self-consciously written, this is an excellent book for anyone with an interest in how Mexican racial politics can be seen to operate on the ground, finds Zalfa Feghali.

Latino Americans is a landmark three-part, six-hour documentary series that is set to air nationally on PBS in the fall of 2013.

Community Village‘s insight:

In just watching the teaser of 3 minutes and twenty-three seconds I can say:

Bilingualism messes with the mind of white supremacists.

A white supremacist does not want to acknowledge that bilingual people are twice as knowledgeable in the language department.

A white supremacist will not admit that it’s better to know two or more languages.

A white supremacist thinks their own “white” language is the best language and they think it’s the only valid language.

White supremacy seeks to devalue and disrespect any cultural aspects outside of white culture.
